The three movies took place before America was involved in the war, and for that fact, war wasn't really rolling in Europe yet during the datelines of the trilogy, so we don't know what happened to him during the 40's. : That is very true, but there were so many "retreads" from the first war that many men drew an exemption from a lot of the rules that allowed them to skip going "over there" in WWII. In Indy's case, his mother was dead, and we're not sure yet of his father's status at this time period, so in Indy's case, he could have utilized that exemption. Regards. Michaelson

Indy probably joined up and was placed in inteligence because of his education and his past work for the government his war time record was sealed.
