There were two artists primarily responsible for the posters of the Indiana Jones films: the late Richard Amsel and Drew Struzan.

Amsel did the original 1981 American poster, and the 1982 USA rerelease poster (the most prominently featured art - namely on the video cassette cover) of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. He also did the posters for THE STING, MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, THE DARK CRYSTAL, FLASH GORDON, THE SHOOTIST, MAD MAX III and many others. He used a technique of often painting a base coat of color (usually acrylic, sometimes watercolor) and overlaying it with cross-hatched colored pencils - a special thick wax pencil, which evokes the "old time" pop art designs. His RAIDERS art for the rerelease is probably his most popular -- and best -- work.

Struzan did another poster design for RAIDERS that was used abroad (namely Japan) upon its first release, and then redistributed in America for a special 10th anniversary poster. He also did the main poster designs for TEMPLE OF DOOM and LAST CRUSADE, as well as the STAR WARS special edition posters. His technique is similar, in that he uses a base coat of acrylics, with colored pencil for details. He frequently uses an airbrush, however, which gives the work a more photographic, smoother feel. Struzan is perhaps the most prominent artist of movie art working today.

Another artist of note is John Alvin, who did the "teaser" poster for TEMPLE OF DOOM - the one with Indy standing under the temple pillar, shrouded in siulhuette. I believe this work was done with oils, if not acrylics or a combination of both. He also did art for the STAR WARS trilogy.
