I remember hearing the story of Indiana Smith years ago when YIJC came out, but I don't recall hearing about the confusion with the Steve McQueen (my idol) character Nevada Smith. I heard "Jones" was chosen because "Smith" was too common. But that never made sense to me; I've known more Joneses than Smiths. Of course, there's also the rumor that he was named Indiana because Spielberrg was a big fan of Warner Bros' Michigan J. Frog. But we all know that can't be right!

PS I think Indiana Rabinowitz would've worked better....
