To get the diacritical mark ("dots") hold down 'option', punch 'u', let go 'option', type a/o/u. This should give you the Umlaute.
If that doesn't work, you can write them as ae, oe, ue. For example: Muenchen. That's a legit method.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to type Umlaute ever since I installed a Japanese language kit. Go figure... :(
