The "X" rating is supposed to be the quantity of beaver fur felt, which is more water repellent, just higher quality in general.

I have been told that X ratings differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. Some shoot high and others low. I'm not sure if there is a universal measurement to determine the quantity of beaver fur, or if there is a test to do on a completed hat to determine the amount.

Rest assured that the Peters Bros, is a great hat though, well worth the money, and Joe will make you feel very re-assured on the phone.
