Matt, American bullwhips tend to be a heavier then the stockwhip or the Australian bullwhip as well.
The material used for bullwhip handles pretty much depends on the whipmaker’s preference. As Paul pointed out David Morgan uses a steel spike as his base. Wood or steel pipe swivel handles are common and Toheti Cane tends to be popular in Australian bullwhips.
Regarding the David Morgan book, it is a great book packed with information, I would definitely recommend it. You might also want to visit the Australian Plaiters and Whipmakers Association. They have a web site at http://www2.tpg.com.au/users/ramskull/
