That was one of the complaints the critics had too, back when YIJC came out. I don't think it was too far-fetched, especially when Indy was very young. His father was a pillar of academia, and had access to all sorts of cool places where the bigwigs of the era could meet. And a lot of the people Indy met as a young man weren't famous when he met them. In 1916, who'd ever heard of some skank French lieutenant named DeGualle? Or a Vietnamese patriot named Ho Chi Minn? Or a starving writer named Hemmingway? I thought the show did a fine job presenting these people without making it appear too contrived. Besides, it was exciting every week finding out who Indy would run into next. I doubt that everyone will ever see eye-to-eye on this issue, but that's the way it is on every issue on this forum. I'm a shameless George Hall fan; there are a couple of folks around here who couldn't stand the whole "Old Indy" thing. Their loss, I suppose! :)
