: : : How does the S&W Model 27 rate among the Indy-style revolvers? I see plenty written about the Model 28, but the details of the 27 are few.
: : It's the same weapon, but the 28 has a matt blued finish and was called the "Highway Patrol" model, where the 27 has the royal blue fine shine finish. By the way, he Model 27 was the first and original .357 magnum ever created. Regards. Michaelson
: : The model 27 is also a bit rarer in the correct 4" bbl. length. For most of i'ts run barrel lengths were offered as standard in 3-1/2", 5", 6-1/2", and 8-3/8, with the 4" being standardized much later in production. I'm working from memory here, but check the Roy Jenks book. Dr.Brody
You have a better chance finding a 4" in a police or highway patrol trade in grouping. I know that the Model 27 was the primary side arm of the Florida Highway Patrol when I was associated with them in the late 80's. They traded in boxes full of 27's for the Beretta 92, and all of the 27's were either 5 inch or occasional 4 inch barrel, and I mean true 5 and 4 inchers too, so they must have been ordered in those lengths specifically for the Patrol at the time.
