Hmmm... gotta go watch What Lies Beneath again. Though you could be mistaken, it's probably pretty plausible that a stuffed E.T. could appear in with the daughter's things since she looks old enough to have been caught up in the E.T. hype in 1982 on. Plus, Zemeckis does have strong ties with Spielberg and this film is a DreamWorks movie too.
Also, for another E.T. cameo (besides in The Phantom Menace) watch Gremlins. In the scene where they're in the department store and that kid is trying to find the big boss Gremlin, you can see a whole stack of stuffed animals, and next to Bugs Bunny and Sylvestor the cat, there's a stuffed E.T.!! Whoo-hoo!
