The closest I ever came to purchasing a HJ was to do exactly this. Way back when - I guess it's been about a year now. This was around the time I began experimenting with the idea of getting a hat with the right basics and doing the mod's myself. I ended up in David Morgan's shop buying an Akubra Drover. Before I reached that point, however, I made one of my two lifetime calls to HJ and talked to Mr. Swales.

To start, he was a very nice man. I did, however, get the "lord, another one of THEM" responses. I then explained that all I wanted was the basic fedora, and that I would do all the mod's. He told me that was the silliest thing he'd ever heard, and seemed a bit offended that I thought there ought to be anything as boorish as a discount. "The price is the price is the price. We do not do business that way..."

Maybe he was having a bad day?
