This distressing gives the right look! I wonder about the use of a solvent on leather, too. However, I have used denatured alcohol on leather shoes that didn't fit perfectly in some spots. I soaked the leather and it was softened and more pliable. As far as I can tell, there was no negative effect on the leather (they were cowhide shoes). Of course, I applied a lot of leather conditioner afterwards.
