I've always held that if Indy were going to buy a jacket today, it would probably be a goatskin US Wings. He could walk in off the street and buy one and it would wear like iron.
I think the point referenced about the authenticity of a particular leather at the time, though, is probably accurate. A jacket like Indy's purchased in 1935 would probably be made from horsehide - it was prevalent and also the most durable thing around.
Lambskin, to me says this: "we're shooting a movie in 130 degree weather and the lead needs to be wearing a leather jacket. Lets find the lightest material we can to keep things as comfortable as possible? If we burn through a few more because they are lighter - well that's better then burning through a few lead actors..." Just a little off the cuff speculation.
