SO, yesterday Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior, proclaimed that ethnohistoric data regarding Northwest Plateau Indians can be applied willy-nilly to a 9,000+ year old skeleton.
In other words, traditions that can be documented to be approximately several hundred years old, and which APPARENTLY mesh with archaeological data dating to perhaps 4,000 years ago (at its MOST speculative), can be used to claim that these ethnohistorically "modern" people are direct descendants of those living more than 9,000 years earlier
SIMPLY
because they inhabited (or at least were found) the same many-thousand square mile region.
There is simply one way to characterize to Babbitt's fantasy reasoning, and it comes from the ass-end of a horse.
For anyone interested to read Secretary Babbitt's
UNSCIENTIFIC and IRRATIONAL remarks, comments and determinations which are ENTIRELY UNSUBSTANTIATED by ANY DATA, here's the link:

Anyone interested in pursuing the facts and the real scientific truth is better off looking at the link below.
The link directs to the "Friends of the Past" website, documenting the whole disaster of the Kennewick Man case, from every illegal and inept act of the US Army Corps of Engineers to the current lawsuit brought by a group of scientists to halt the secret reburial of the bones.
REGARDLESS of what Babbitt thinks he is doing, and of what the USACE has done, such actions as they intend are ILLEGAL and OUTSIDE of the boundaries of the 1990 NAGPRA law.
Quite simply, in my and many others' opinion, the Corps and Babbitt are full of shit on this one, and more than happy to concede the public interest and scientific knowledge to the intolerance and ignorance stemming from the frightening superstitions of a politically powerful faction from several Indian groups.
