Good point. My assumption has always been that, since there were no direct San Francisco-Kathmandu flights back in '36, that the clipper only took Indy so far (Hong Kong? Shanghai?), and he had to catch a ride to Nepal. So maybe Dennis Muren's character (let's call him "nameless Nazi #1") contacted Toht, who tracked Indy to Nepal. And perhaps Indy even had a run-in with Dennis Muren on the streets of Hong Kong...
