That musty, army surplus stank on leather. How does one get rid of it?

I just got a West German surplus brown leather Hi-Power flap holster today, but it has a case of the surplus stank. Any ideas how to get it out? Obviously, I can't throw it in the wash machine. I thought about soaking it in soapy water, rinsing, letting it dry, then a coat of conditioner.
