Maybe he was trying to explain something we don't really understand. And if the crusaders really wanted to make it hard to find old Richard's tomb, they probably would've pulled a stunt like disguising the X on the floor. Considering that awesome Grail Temple they built out in the middle of a desert, I figure it wasn't beyond their technical means to make the X hard to see from certain angles.
