No, I don't believe him to be genius, I just think they played him off as foolish. You're both right; he was not a field man and would have no idea what to do. But I think he would tried to remain composed and assertive. The best comparrison that comes to mind is C3-PO. He tried to retain his reserved and stately manner and it was this that always made him an ass. In LC Marcus was just an ass for no appearant reason.
