Somebody else on this forum said it best samo time ago: The so-called "Indy" of YIJC didn't seem anything like the man in the films. Instead, Lucas & Co. turned him into a dumb, sniveling twit who goes traveling all over the world to meet historically famous real people like some sort of globetrotting Forrest Gump. I wouldn't pay too much attention to YIJC or the books, if I were you. I doubt that Lucas will when it's time to write the script for Indy IV.
