Okay, this is sort of hard to understand, and I'm not sure
where exactly I heard it, but there goes: When they filmed Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1980, they needed some bullwhips for Harrison to use.
Glenn Randall, the film's stunt coordinator, let Harrison use his
David Morgan bullwhips from his own personal collection.
Morgan explained to me once in an e-mail that the bullwhips
that he offered when Raiders was made had whitehide falls on them.
He added that whitehide was much more durable and long-lasting than redhide. He said that he stopped using whitehide a few years ago, because it was becoming more difficult to find a tannery that produced good quality whitehide. So, he switched to redhide falls.
The bullwhips used in Raiders have whitehide falls. These can be seen in a number of stills from the film, particularly the Cairo marketplace fight scene. By the time 1984 rolled around, he was using redhide on his bullwhips. Look closely at the scene where the giant Thugee picks up Indy's bullwhip to beat him with it. It is a nice close-up shot, and the falls are clearly redhide. The falls on the bullwhips in Last Crusade are redhide as well.
So basically, it's like the difference in the M.B.A. pants
color, or the style of Wested Jacket: they are all authentic, but it coms down to a matter of personal preference as to what you want.
I wanted the Raiders outfit, so I converted my bullwhips to the whitehide falls, for all the good it does. But it really doesn't matter, as the average person on the street won't know the difference.
They just see a bullwhip as just that- a bullwhip. It's a detail that only the diehard fans would know or care about. So, in the interest of complete Raiders authenticity, I used whitehide falls.
If you want a picture of my Morgan bullwhip with whitehide fall,
just e-mail me at WhipWarrior@aol.com and I will be happy to send
you one. Hope this was fun and informative!

: : SKT Bush Leather, a whip company in Australia, produces
: : great, high-quality whitehide falls for about $2 apiece. I purchased
: : four of them, and a dozen Australian crackers last month. I changed
: : the falls on both of my David Morgan's by myself, and they turned
: : out great. Now I have authentic Raiders bullwhips. On a side note,
: : the whitehide falls are just a bit thinner and much lighter than
: : the redhide oned that Morgan puts on his whips. When you use it,
: : the bullwhip's end feels much lighter, and consequently, moves
: : faster. They produce a nice, sharp crack, though.

:
: Hi Dale... nice to see you back. I have a (probably) dumb question:
: are the falls of the Morgan whip "not" authentic for the Indy whips?
: That is, do the whips used in the movies have the whitehide falls you
: mentioned?

: Regards,
: Profoessor Jones
