Mr. Moore wasn't a poet, per se, but rather an educator and father who, having delayed his holiday shopping past the sensible point, was pressed into poetry lest St. Nick not visit *his* children.
(No record exists as to whether said children happily accepted said poem in lieu of sugar plums, etc)
So a typo, given the time constraints, was surely possible. But given that, and the following Blitzen, there can be no real doubt as to intent... those reindeer were Thunder and Lightning!
