Bag Strap

So I've decided that the strap I origanally put on my bag is too light in color. This should be pretty easy to remedy with some dark shoe polish, but I'm also a little concerned about the weight of the strap. How heavy is the leather most of you all have used? The only stuff I could find that came in a long enough length was pretty light weight. It's certainly not heavy enough to be used for something like a belt since it would stretch too much. Anyone out there have any thoughts on this one?
