I believe the original plan was to release it in 2000, in between Episodes I and II. This was before the script (probably Saucer Men From Mars, or possibly one centering on Atlantis) was deemed unfit by Spielberg and Ford.

Ideally, Indy 4 should've been planned for release this summer, the 20th anniversary of Raiders. Then it wouldn't have been unlikely to have seen a fifth and final Indy come out in 2004.

Oh well.
