Something I noticed in TOD (PLEASE READ! )

I was watching Temple of Doom recently, and I came to the spike trap scene ("Willie! WE ARE GOING TO DIE!!!!" couldn't resist). Anyway, I was wondering, if you get past the spike trap, the Thugee are pretty confident you're either going to face ultimate doom or life-long slavery, right? So what do you need a spike trap for? Please share your thoughts.
