I think that's because the first one was a remake of a classic- they had an obligation to direct more attention to the mummy and basic storyline rather than the hero. This next one should be a lot better with a ton of action, a kid sidekick(ToD), and probably a little more in depth with the characters since they already got the mummy story out of the way.
