: It's obviously a movie critical of war, and it's more about the human condition than anything else. Maybe you should read The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. You will find themes like self-discovery, self-deception, civilization versus savagery, you will even find the quest.

Anyone that knows anything about the Vietnam War knows that movies like Apocalypse Now, Platton, and others are offensive and derrogatory to the men and women that served their country. Exactly FG!! Apocalypse Now is not a "Viet Nam" movie in the sense that it is a true representation of Nam. But rather it is an updated working of Conrad's Heart of Darkness merely using the war in Nam as a setting.
