I don't think Indy's son should be an archaeologist. I think Abner would have steered him elsewhere, because he was so bitter about Indy's having betrayed him. So little Indy Junior (as opposed to Indy Sr, who is really Henry Jr...never mind.), grows up not to be an archaeologist, but to be a thieving black-marketer. And possibly a Soviet agent. Then he and Indy meet and Indy has to redeem his son somehow. Sort of a reversal of the old hero myth...
