Like a lot of real gear, these shoes look different when broken in/really worn -- they cease to look like dress shoes and look more like boots. This type of shoe is really authentic to the 30s, when a lot of new stuff looked pretty bad, then better when broken in -- things then were built to last (some things, more than today for sure) and the look we associate with the 30s is often that of a well worn example. Take the horsehide jackets -- look like vinyl when new, but great after a year of hard use (or ten years).
Stacy adams has been around a long time -- don't know how the quality is these days.
