Kreigsmarine cost-saving measures!

In Fate of Atlantis, Indiana Jones (a man with little or no naval experience) and Sophia Hapgood (a psychic-turned-spy) were able to successfully pilot a German U-boat to an underwater city. They were also able to escape the aforementioned underwater city with the aforementioned U-boat. One assumes they were able to pilot the U-boat a bit longer, because they appear eight years later in another video game. Why did the Kreigsmarine waste time and money training thousands of young men to become expert submariners? Apparently U-boats were so danged easy to control that two unexperienced Amerikaners were able to do it. Or was Indy able to convince a few gullible German submariners that he was the new XO?
