In Reply to: Which Indy-inspired movie are you looking forward to more: Tomb Raider or The Mummy Returns (assuming you're interested in seeing either of them...) posted by Brett (Maverick) Lambert on April 08, 2001 at 20:53:30:
As a film student and Indyfan I have been a very dedicated fan of Lara Croft and have been following the development of this film since 1997 when it was speculated that the film would be released in the Summer of '99. I was also a fan of the first installment of The Mummy in '99.
However, I find myself very afraid of the possibility of these two films now that the extended trailers are in theatres. The Mummy Returns looks like it might be horrendous with a new "Jake Lloyd" type character, a very "Gungan-inspired" CG army sequence, and "Matrix" effects (why they need these in a sequel to a film that had none I'll never know...). It simply looks atrocious, as many sequels tend to be...
Tomb Raider (which ideally would make up for The Mummy Returns' shortcomings) looks like it will instead prove to be a typical video game film, a story with no understanding of the central character and a contrived plot that only makes a mockery of itself (and attempting to be as cool as Raiders in this instance).
The Clock of Ages???? Sounds cool but "sounds" can be deceiving. From the trailer, the set of this "ancient machine" looks more like a set from "The Dark Crystal II" and now it seems Lara has a acquired a comical sidekick, her own X-Menesque Danger Room, a nice cheesy engraved skull on her beltbuckle, a paramilitary "Matrix-like" black outfit, and some of the silliest action scenes I have ever witnessed. Wish I had a bungee cord in my mansion that I could conveniently harness myself to whenever terrorists showed up! What's the clincher for this opus from the director of the mockworthy Con-Air? Yes, you guessed it. Living stone stautes! Oh, this is rich.
Somebody give me a character like Indy again! A guy who does things with his fists and his wits, without fancy gadgetry and camera trickery that allows him to float in midair and jump like a ninja through computer generated sets. Indy is true action/adventure while these films are looking to be no more than cheap imitations.
I very much hope that I am wrong because I loved The Mummy and I am a big Tomb Raider fan.
Until then, hold onto your fedoras because more than likely these films are making it up as they go, and not in a good way.
I hope I am proven wrong.
