I have it, taped it, loved it, and have perused it to death. So here's a list of my observations of the similarites between Gunga Din and TOD if you're interested. It's pretty amazing to see when you list all the similar threads just how related TOD is to this film. Some who haven't seen it may consider this list a set of SPOLIERS. If you don't want the movie ruined, then refrain from reading further.
1. Both start with a gong being clanged by a very large guy.
2. Both talk of the "Thuggee" and their love of killing in the worship of Kali.
3. Both have an "elephant ride" of sorts.
4. Both have a rope bridge.
5. Both have the heroes witness a Thuggee ceremony in secret.
6. Both star "Mola Ram" (actually the character in Gunga Din is never called by this name, but he is so similar that he might as well be Mola Ram's father or grandfather or something)
7. Both involve the British Army whipping up on the Thuggee cult.
8. Both have a village ravaged by the Thuggee presence.
What a cool movie this is! I love this film!
