Questions RE: Modifying a Wested

I've got a pre-mod Wested Temple. Does anybody know the correct side strap height, measured from the bottom of the average length jacket?
Also, should the straps be located on the outside of the jacket, rather than stitched into the seams?
Perhaps some of the recent post-mod owners could help.
If anyone has had experience modifying leather jackets, will it weaken the material to unpick it and then re-stitch?

It's a great jacket, but I just wish Wested had got it right in the first place.
