First, I don't care for the movie, but apparently Lean wanted to play up on Lawrence's possible homosexuality. This was suppressed by the studio and the footage destroyed. Several web sites discuss this.

I don't know whether he was gay in real life and that explained his behavior, but apparently that was what Lean wanted to bring out in the movie.
