Lucas had little to nothing to do with that. He thought up the idea of having a Christmas special, and then writers and directors elaborated on this misguided idea and turned it from a potentially mediocre spin-off to a Battlefield Earth-esque embarrassment.

I haven't seen it myself, I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones. ;)
