: What does it mean when a fedora is described as having a snap brim? Is it better to have one or not to have one?
: Thanks, Ted
A snap brim is when the brim can literally be "snapped" up or down. Most fedoras have snap brims, and are usually worn snapped up in the back and down in front. (a la Sam Spade, Rick Blaine, Mike Hammer, Indy in LC. . .) It is less dressy to see a fedora worn with the brim snapped down all around, but Indy did it in Raiders. Porkpies are usually worn with the brim snapped up all around. (a la Elvis Costello) Hats that don't have snap brims, like homburgs, derbies, bowlers, top hats, etc. have the brim fixed in one position, and are usually stiffer for that reason. Hope this helps.
