Isn't "Char Brown" the color of the ribbon?

Regarding the colors of the hats in the pictures, I personally think they're all "mink brown". Some appear lighter, but I'd chalk that up to the camera's flash. Look at the pegboard behind the hats, the center is lighter than the outer edges. That would make the four hats in the middle appear to be a different shade. Ribbon-wise I think all the hats have "char brown" ribbons, with the exception of the third hat from the left in the top row. That one appears to have a black ribbon.

So I think maybe you've confused ribbon color with the felt color. Check with Joe though, maybe he's started making the customs in a new color.
