My guess is that in the '80s studios still thought of VCRs as something most consumers didn't have, which may have been true at the time; remember the 'top-loading' VHS machines that went for $999?
It wasn't until the masses had VCRs (at dirt cheap prices) that the $100 'rental-only' mentality went away and new releases are priced to buy.

: That's true. I was very young, but I know what you mean. I had a dubbed copy of Star Wars and Empire that were so black you could barely see them! Also most VHS were rental only and carried that $100 price tag- how was that justified?
