It was decided that Indiana Smith sounded too close to "Nevada Smith", the title character of a Steve McQueen western from the 60s.
: I suppose that all of us have heard the old rumor that George Lucas kicked around the name "Indiana Smith" before settling on a "less common" name. Anybody know why he chose "Jones"? I hate to break this to George Lucas, but Jones is a very common name. I know at least fifteen non-related Joneses. Was Jones chosen in honor of someone? Of course, now that we're all totally used to the name Jones, I can't imagine him using any other name. Indiana Stankowicz? Indiana McClellan? Indiana Diliberto?

: PS Jones is apparently the second most common name in Scotland (Henry Sr's homeland). Numbers one and three are Smith and Brown, respectively. Indiana Brown?
