Actually, if you look closely at some shots, you'll see that when the whip is in the holder, it's wrapped with wire. Not wanting to damage mine, I took a piece of leather strap and tied it around my whip. It stays in the holder perfectly now.

I think there's a picture from ToD with Indy holding Willie's chin in the indian village at the end of the movie. If memory serves, you can see a wire around the whip there.
