I know that there was an archaeologist actually claiming to be the influence for Indy, even down to the nickname. His name is Dr. Vendyl Jones (he points out that if you drop the first and last letters of his first name it makes "Endy"). He also claimed that the boulder scene in Raiders was taken from a real-life experience in which a loose rock broke away while he was excavating and tumbled down into his unit, almost crushing him.
Of course, as we all know, Lucas got the name from his dog and the boulder scene came from Speilburg. I guess I can't blame this archaeologist though. If you were an archaeologist named Jones when this came out wouldn't you try to get some publicity? Last I heard, Dr. Jones was working on proving the existence of Noah's Ark.
