Sure, it's stupid to cover up leather. But they exist and that's what I've been told they are there for. Maybe it has something to do with maintaining a certain luster to the finish after extensive outside use in motorcycle conditions. Hell if I know. I think it's the same reasoning with putting vinyl on leather as electing a crack-head, drunk driving moron as president. That's just America! God Bless it!
