Stuck at the grate!!!

Help an Indy256 Last Crusade gamer

I'm stuck at the end of the catacombs in Venice right in front of a metal grating with an old rusty lock which is securing an ancient casket. I can't seem to do anything here. At the other end is a pool of water with a 'plug' and further back at a tunnel intersection is a 'slab' on the floor- but I can do nothing!!!
My inventory at this stage is :

Red cordon

Biplane manual
Maps opf tunnels
Whip
