Drinking (especially cocktails) was ubiquitous in the first half of this century, particularly during prohibition and its aftermath. Watch the Thin Man films to see just how much booze a happily married couple can down in the span of two hours -- it's incredible. Or watch any Bogart movie -- the rituals surrounding drinking are absolutely ingrained into the social customs of the day.
