I remember seeing Raiders in the theater back in '81, and there's a
moment during the opening credits that needs the wide screen format.
It may seem like a small thing, but it's those effective "small things"
that make the difference between a merely good movie and a great one.
When, after a tracking shot, the poison dart appears in the tree-trunk,
we see in the left background two figures turn slowly to face the
foreground action. Then, after the dart is taken out, in a moment that's
timed perfectly, they dash dramatically forward and examine the dart.
But all you see in pan-n-scan is the dart being taken out, then these
two guys just APPEAR THERE from out of the frame.The scene is flat
compared with how it plays out in widescreen.
