Having gone through a similar deal (although yours is FAR worse than mine) I couldn't help but think that some crumb at the post office dug my jacket and decided to keep it for himself.
I hope this isn't the case but if it's any help, when I finally had to fill out the forms claiming my jacket as lost, I did receive a check from the post office PDQ. Luckily I was smart enough to have insured it.
