Actually, if you don't need a boot disc in DOS and the game runs ok, then your Virtual Memory should be ok. Therefore, if it freezes in Windows, but runs smoothly in DOS, WITHOUT a boot disc, this sounds like a lack of RAM. Windows and other running programs uses a ton of it, Win98 probably more so. The first Monkey island probably doesn't need as much RAM as Monkey2.
