Older rock: Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin.
On the SOMEWHAT newer end of things, The Police, U2.

Also, Beck, Moby, Radiohead.
Although not a HUGE jazz aficionado, I enjoy the singer Billie Holiday
(tell me that Macy Gray doesn't emulate her singing style), and
pianist Theloneous Monk (his 'outside-the-box' playing should sound
'wrong,' but it's absolutely 'RIGHT' - that's genious).
I have a particular soft spot for the Polish composer Chopin.
I also like songs from American Musical Theater: Gershwin, Kern,
Rogers and Hart, etc.
P.S. John Williams fans should check out Stravinsky...
