In a discussion of the Magnum P.I. episode Raiders of the Lost Art on the A & E Magnum P.I. message board, a poster identified as oyster_guy wrote:
"I myself wonder about the motivations of this episode. It was certainly very well executed, filled with humour, irony and grace. In the hands of lesser talent the premise surely would have degenerated into terrible camp. I reject the view that Harrison Ford's career would have been Selleck's if he could have got time off to Raiders. While I am sure Selleck as Indy would have worked, he and Ford are not interchangable. Selleck has alot of irony and self-deprication in his persona that is really tricky to cast. I could see a few of Tom Hanks roles working for him. Nevertheless Selleck should have no regrets whatsoever. He has created an important body of work and has generated an enormous amount of affection and enthusiasm for his characters. I am a newbie to this board and the net in general and am struck by the depth of analysis in so many posts. I don't see anything like it for any of Ford's characters. Well done Mr.Selleck, VERY well done."
When pointed to the Indyfan site, he replied:
"I take your point, its an impressive site but...while I see the enthusiasm I don't feel the sincerity. I think more tears are shed over the occasional MPI episode because the premise is rooted in a kind of reality and has complicated politics. In contrast Raiders is more of a Olde Timey serial cartoon and has a fan base that enjoys it on that level. Archeologists dismiss Raiders as a fantasy while Vets can look at MPI and feel better abouts themselves."
Maybe oyster_guy needs to be set straight . . ..
