I was in the office early on 9/11. I work in LA, and had a 9:00 am EST conference call scheduled with the Port Authority of NY/NJ. Their offices were in the World Trade Center - building #1. I was waiting for the phone to ring, and had NPR on the radio. Around 6:20 am I heard the news bulletin of the first plane...
I had a number of friends and associates at the Port Authority. I've learned this morning that some of them are ok. Many more are still missing.
The world has changed - and it hasn't. I tell my employees, my friends, my family - the world is just as safe as it was a week ago. Yesterday's events only change our perception. I would venture to say these events will not to become common occurrences, but they were always more possible than most would have liked to believe. I hope so, at least for the sake of my son and daughter.
I keep waiting to hear the phone ring or for an email to show up saying another friend is safe. I look at my contact list under “Port NY/NJ”, and see real names or real people. I remember standing around their offices, seeing the pictures of their families on their desks. The whole thing is surreal.
Crass remarks are a sign of immaturity and weakness. Anyone who has had to clean somebody else’s' blood off of his or her hands knows this...
