I always assumed it was sand, the only remains of the tablets, i mean they are 2000 years old - and with a little power of god. Maybe That's all the Nazi's were supposed to get, perhaps if a more 'not so nazi' person opened it they would have found the tablets. You know, like God didn't want them to fall into the Nazi's hands, or something like that. I never heard anything about SALT though?
: .... The sand in the Ark. It's always puzzled me as to what it actually was. Was it supposed to be the remains of the Commandment tablets? I know they would not have disintegrated, but this is Hollywood here;) Or were the tablets removed at some point long ago for safety and replaced with sand to simulate the weight?
