I've always figred it was a waste to destroy the entire temple for the sake of that idol (not that I didn't have fun watching the temple be destroyed). That would be like collapsing a pyramid to get the mummy. I believe an archaeologist could learn far more from the structure than the single artifact. The main difference btween Indy and Belloq is that Indy collects treasure for museums, Belloq for personal profit.
